EBA 2011 - Ratingen Germany

This weekend the EBA convention took place in Ratingen (Germany). The exhibition, demos, new talent contest and the whole event was simply great and worth the long driving trip. 

The new talent contest was the most interesting part of the convention for me and despite the fact that Tomaž Kovšca (Slovenia) got a really bad starting material, he  ended the contest as 1st Runner-up. Congratulations for this great result from my side Tomaz. The first place went to Walter Shmutz form Swiss and the third place to Sebastian Rouzot from Monaco.

Nik Rozmans Thuja and Rajko Podgorniks Res Chemaecyparis ware the only two slovenian trees participating at the exhibition.

The demonstrations ware good, some of them more, some of them less, but somehow I have the feeling that the show of the demonstrators became more important than the quality of the demos, the demonstrations of techniques, knowledge and creativity is less important as the show itself. Im not shore this is a good sign for the future. 

The trees ware very good, the trees ware great. No words are needed to feel and enjoy  this great trees.

EBA 2012

In May 2012 the Slovenian bonsai club is organizing the XXVIII. EBA & ESA Convention. A new web page was launched today to provide all needed information’s relevant to the convention.

I’m sure it will be a great Bonsai event with lots of great Bonsai, Suiseki and interesting demos from Salvatore Liporace, Kevin Wilson and Tony Tickle.

Workshop at Niks place

This Saturday passed lightning fast. A workshop organized by Nik Rozman has developed into a very pleasant day. A lot of good discussion, relaxed work on trees, good company and a excellent hosts (btw. - with a very good Yamadori offer) is the best summary of a truly great day.

Carpinus Betulus - Update

Sometimes I feel that everything happens so slowly, it all takes to long. The reality is quite different. Every time I look back and analyse the development of a tree, I realize that a step forward was made, but also an opportunity for improvement was missed, a detail was overlooked, a mistake was done, or the right timing for a specific task task was missed.

2010-05 - Carpinus Betulus

The more developed a tree is, the more such errors are becoming apparent. The details are more obvious and disturbing so they have to be changed, eliminated or included in the design in some other way.

2011-07 - Carpinsu Betulus

The Hornbeam definitely made a step forward this year. The left lower branch became incredible thicker in the last 6 months and caught the right side, the primary branches are more or less developed and the ramification improved.

Everything else is still incomplete, and ahead of me. The tree develops at its own pace and does not understand that I do not have as much time as it would need. But when we caught the rhythm all the details will be just right.

Chamaecyparis Pisifera Bulevard - Update

A little bit more than two years have passed since the purchase of this tree in a local nursery. I think that during this period the bush developed quite nice, into a solid tree.

Next year it will be transplanted into a new, more suitable pot, which will be lower, much wider and very likely oval and unglazed.

Besides regular care, which includes almost daily pinching of new growth, feeding with nutrition and watering, my plan is to developed a number of details and then the tree should be ready for its first exhibition ... let's see.
